Goose Gossage doesn't have a problem with the Yankees, who won't invite him to be a spring training guest instructor after he made inflammatory remarks the last two years.
"I don't like (general manager Brian) Cashman," Gossage said in a phone interview with NJ Advance Media from his Colorado home. "That's all. It's not a secret."
Gossage, a 66-year-old Hall of Fame pitcher, said Cashman would prefer to "have a nerd in uniform" as manager. Gossage also questioned Cashman's leadership.
"If he had any balls, he'd do what he wants to do," Gossage said of Cashman. "He doesn't think he needs any baseball people around. Maybe he's right. The way the game is being run today, maybe you don't."
The retired pitcher said late owner George Steinbrenner wouldn't have approved of how Cashman handled young outfielder Clint Frazier last spring. After weeks of questions from reporters about the length of Frazier's hair, which appeared to violate the team's longstanding grooming policy, the club finally told Frazier to cut it.
"George would have called up (Frazier's) agent and said, 'Get your boy and get out of here,'" Gossage said. "It turned into a big, huge deal. Cash, he's not going to back up what The Boss wanted. I see things like that slipping through the cracks all the time."
